What is a Soffit?
The soffit is an important part of making your home's structure to function correctly in all kinds of weather. Whether constructed of wood, vinyl, or a metal such as aluminum, it is designed to protect the underside of eaves. Aluminum and vinyl are the most common materials used and we can provide options that are solid, perforated throughout or a combination of the two.
Installing Soffits
There are several basic steps for the installation or repair of a soffit for your Brownsburg home:
- Calculate how much soffit material is needed - Whether we determine that we can replace a few pieces due to pest damage or if all of it needs to be replaced with a better functioning vented version to replace old, warped or damaged wood, the process is the same. Most soffits come in 12" or 16" wide panels of 12-foot length. We will calculate about 5-10% more for waste and overlaps for the length that needs to be replaced.
- Preparation of the eaves and related structure - We will need to verify that all surfaces are straight as well as review the boards and shingles that might impact our install process. If not part of a new gutter install, in most cases, the current gutters will need to be removed to install new soffits.
- Installation of the Receiving Channels - F-channels or J-channels are used as the channel to receive the soffit. We nail them to the wall every 12 inches and allow a small gap if turning a corner.
- Soffit panels are cut to fit - We will measure from the wall to the fascia and subtract a small amount to allow for movement.
- Soffit installation - We then install each panel into the receiving channel.
- Final installation - The final step is to apply the trim and to nail it using trim nails.
Fascia Board Repair
Similar to soffits, fascia boards are an important part of your home's structure that works in conjunction with the roof and gutters to protect your home. The fascia board is the vertical board just below the roof edge that gutters are usually installed against. Because the gutters are next to the fascia boards, poor water handling or lack of maintenance such as painting can cause these boards to fail faster than many for your home.
Repairing fascia boards will always require removal of your gutters so we perform a full inspection at the time to make sure returning the existing gutters will provide proper handling of rainwater and snow. If we find that a replacement is needed, this is the time to get it done!

Why We Inspect Soffits and Fascia Boards
A rain gutter contractor inspects soffit and fascia boards to identify any damage or issues that could affect the function of the gutters. These inspections typically include checking for rot, warping, and water damage, as well as ensuring that the soffit and fascia are securely attached to the house.
Rot is a common issue found during inspections, as it can occur when water is allowed to penetrate the wood of the soffit and fascia boards. Warping can also be caused by water infiltration, as well as by changes in temperature and humidity. To repair rot and warping, the contractor will typically remove and replace any damaged sections of the soffit and fascia.
Water damage is another issue that a rain gutter contractor will look for during an inspection. This can be caused by leaks in the gutters or by improper installation of the soffit and fascia. To repair water damage, the contractor may need to reseal or replace damaged sections of the soffit and fascia. They will also check for any leaks in the gutter system and will make repairs if necessary.
Attachment is also an important aspect of the inspection, as soffit and fascia that are not securely attached to the house can lead to water infiltration and other issues. The contractor will check to ensure that the soffit and fascia are properly fastened to the house and will make any necessary repairs to ensure a secure attachment.
Another important aspect to inspect is if there is any signs of pests, such as termites or carpenter ants, that have infested the soffit or fascia. These pests can eat through the wood and cause extensive damage. If these pests are found, the contractor will remove and treat the affected areas and possibly work with a pest control specialist to prevent any future infestations.
In addition to these specific issues, the contractor may also check for any other potential problems that could affect the integrity of the soffit and fascia. This may include checking for cracks, gaps, or other signs of wear and tear. Any issues found will be reported to the homeowner and repairs will be recommended to maintain the integrity of the gutter system.
Overall, a rain gutter contractor's inspection of soffit and fascia boards is an essential step in ensuring that the gutter system is functioning properly. By checking for issues such as rot, warping, water damage, and proper attachment, the contractor can identify and repair any problems before they become major issues. Additionally, pest infestation and other damage will be identified, treated, and prevented for a well-maintained and secure gutter system.
